Day 1 - Columbus, OH to Angola, IN

A lot of things didn't happen as intended today, but we did travel 189 miles and ended up at a delightful campground in Angola IN.

The travelling part of the day went really well.  The weather was perfect (sunny, calm, mid-70s).  The route was interesting and the roads were in good condition.

The Route
I-270N to US-33, US-33W to Huntsville, OH-117 from Huntsville to Lima, OH-309 from Lima to Delphos, US-30 from Delphos to New Haven, IN and then I-469 and I-69 around Ft. Wayne to Angola on US-20.

The Campground
Circle B RV Campground is located on US-20, just west of Angola. It has over 300 lakefront, wooded and pull-thru sites. The sites are large and level. We saw it on a very busy weekend. It was nicely maintained, peaceful and well run. It's a real value at $32.74 for a full-hookup site.

An Unexpected Tour
We set out to explore the campground after getting settled.  We just happened to say hello to the Messer (sp?) family who were campers and obvious Buckeye fans and received an invitation for a golf cart tour of the grounds.  Bryan was a gracious driver and guide.

So, what went wrong today?
We de-winterize the trailer on the first outing of the year. The first outing normally happens in April or early May, right after we install the batteries. This year was different.  Dick prepped the trailer at the end of April as usual, but we didn't take it out until today.  It sat for 3 1/2 months.

We arrived at the storage lot this morning with intentions of loading groceries, hooking up and going.  But ... the batteries were dead and there's no shore power available for charging at the lot.  The immediate effects were that the refrigerator wouldn't start and the power jack wouldn't operate. We were able to operate the jack manually and start the fridge by doing a limited battery recharge from the car.  It wasn't pretty, but we got going after an hour of messing around.

Later, Dick noticed we didn't have trailer brakes as we slowed for a traffic light in Lima.  We stopped at an auto repair shop and discovered that the car/trailer umbilical cable had a bad connection. We were on our way after resetting the adapter.

Next we ran into a de-winterizing problem.  One of the faucets wouldn't operate.  Dick searched and searched for a shut-off valve that hadn't been opened.  It turned out that the faucet screen was completely blocked with sand.  How and when remain as unsolved mysteries.

And finally, the computer site that generates our trip map (Blogabond) was down.  We looked forward to finally showing some travel progress and couldn't do it.  It came to life just as we began to think our map link was long gone.

These amounted to more "trailer bumps" than we've ever had on a single day.  Fortunately, everything is fixed.  We're looking forward to what tomorrow holds.

  1. Ah, the map's working fine. I was looking forward to it. I do have to say, though, that I'm pretty sure the Pacific Coast is more to the left than up. Have fun. Keep the batteries full.
