Day 2 - Angola, IN to Holland, MI

We enjoyed a leisurely start and a peaceful drive across northern Indiana today. The route turned north at South Bend (hmm ... that sounds counter-intuitive) and we crossed into MI. There were no equipment problems.

The weather was perfect for enjoying the views along the way. We passed through Amish country and saw a number of their farms, buggy sales lots and woodworking factories.

Northern Indiana is a center for RV manufacturing. We passed many assembly plants with storage lots full of new rigs.

The Route
The 173 mile trip followed US-20 from Angola to South Bend and US-31 from South Bend to Holland, MI.

US-20 predates I-80 and I-90. It's the longest highway in the United States. It was fun to travel on a bit of highway history.

We had fun pronouncing Mishawaka and Saugatuck. We seem to find humor in many things when we drive long distances on a hot day.

There were lots of RVs on the highways. Our first thought was that they were heading home from a weekend of fun. Maybe, but we later discovered many of the campgrounds along Lake Michigan are full tonight. Some of the RVers were just changing campgrounds.

The Campground
We ended the day camped at Oak Grove Campground/Resort. It's located in Holland, on the shore of Lake Macatawa, next to Holland State Park. We were lucky to find a site here with no advance reservation.

Neat stuff

* Amish farmers market
We were driving west on US-20 near Elkhart and saw a huge building that looked like a conference center from a distance. A closer look revealed it was the American Countryside Farmers Market. We say "was" because it's closed and not just on Sundays.

It was sold at auction in 2011, It's to become the corporate offices for Waste-Away Group.

* Cruise ship sighting
We went sightseeing after getting set-up at the campground. The Pearl Mist cruise ship was leaving port on Lake Macatawa. It's all white, is 355 feet long and carries 210 passengers .. impressive.

* Buggy sales lots
Scenes along US-20 reminded us that, just like with cars, there are needs for new and used buggy sales lots.

* Holland's downtown park
Holland is famous for its tulips, but its central park is worth a look. We passed the downtown central park on the way to the campground. It's beautiful.

* Captain Sundae
Carol is skilled in spotting and testing specialty ice cream shops in unfamiliar places. Today was no exception. It happened at Captain Sundae in Holland. They are famous for the Tommy Turtle sundae. They claim people come from all over the world to get one. We don't know if it's true, but we do know one person came from Columbus, OH and got one.
