Day 7 - Saginaw, MN to Casselton, ND

We made it to the Great Plains today.  The terrain change as we traveled 266 miles across MN and into ND was gradual and interesting.

The Route
Carol chose a scenic route that passed through the Savanna State Forest, the Leech Lake Indian Reservation and the Smoke Hills State Forest. We left the campground on US-53S, then took MN-194 west to US-2. US-2W took us to MN-200. MN-200 took us to Walker and MN-34 took us to Detroit Lakes where we connected with US-10 and continued on to Fargo where we picked up I-94. Casselton is about 25 miles west of Fargo on I-94.

Along the Way
Today was beautiful. It was sunny, the temperature reached the mid-70s, and there was a brisk breeze.

The first half of the trip was through wilderness. The towns on MN-200 were small and quite far apart. The roads were in very good condition and traffic was light.

We enjoyed a delicious late breakfast at Hill City Cafe in ... you guessed it, Hill City.

Walker and Detroit Lakes were two of the largest cities along the way. Walker was particularly attractive and welcoming.

Terrain Change
The rolling hills and forests of MN gradually changed into the flat-lands of the Great Plains as we approached Fargo.

Welcome to North Dakota

The Campground
Governors RV Park and Campground is conveniently located just off I-94 west of Fargo. The name is impressive (it honors the five ND governors who have called Casselton home), but the facility is just OK.

We arrived and got set up early enough to relax and enjoy the cool evening breeze.

Tomorrow
We'll travel about half-way across the state and stop in Bismarck.
