Day 9 - Theodore Roosevelt National Park

We took a driving tour of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) after getting set-up at the campground.

The park is comprised of three units: the North Unit, the South Unit and the Elkhorn Ranch Unit. We visited the North Unit in late July 2010.

The entrance to the South Unit is on Medora's main street, Pacific Avenue, just a few hundred feet from our campground. The 37 mile loop drive was too tempting to pass up.

Prairie dog towns were our first encounter. Prairie dogs are rodents, members of the squirrel family. There are five species of prairie dogs in North America, but only the black-tailed prairie dog inhabits TRNP.

There's a coyote on the right, near the tree line.

The badlands views were
rugged, colorful and strange.

Cottonwood Campground is located within TRNP, 5 miles from the entrance. It has toilets, drinking water and picnic tables, but no RV hookups.
