Day 6 - Newberry, MI to Saginaw, MN

Last Night
Our campsite at Newberry KOA.
Site #68
This sunset view is from near our campground.
Looking west long MI-28

Today
We slept late and didn't get on the road until 10:30. Unfortunately, this was a 372 mile driving day. The hour gained by entering the Central Time Zone helped us get to the campground before it closed.

The Route
We took MI-28 the rest of the way across the Upper Peninsula from Newberry to Ironwood, then US-2 to Superior, WI. US-53 took us into Duluth and MN-194 got us to the campground.

Along the Way
The weather didn't do much to help sightseeing and picture-taking. It changed constantly from overcast, to light rain, to showers, to brief breakthroughs of sunshine.  The temperature got down to the low 60s and it was windy on the Upper Peninsula.

The drive through most of the Upper Peninsula felt quite desolate. The towns along the way were small, run down and far apart. There are many abandoned RVs, homes and businesses along MI-28. Christmas, Bruce Crossing, Marquette and Superior, WI provided some humor and left positive impressions.

Christmas, MI - Because the rain made it feel out of season.

Christmas looked gloomy today

Bruce Crossing, MI - because we were able to get a very nice late lunch at Char's Cafe.

Marquette, MI - because it was the first large city we had seen in hours.
Marquette Bay from Visitors Center

Superior, WI - because the sun finally gave us some bright waterfront pictures.

Marina on Superior Bay

The Campground
We're staying at Ogstons RV Park in Saginaw, MN. That's right ... Saginaw, MN (not MI) ... it's just west of Duluth.

The campsites are quite large and the grounds are attractive.

  1. Hello you dears. I'm really happy you have new tires!!! You seem to keep your composure through thick and quite thin. I confess I would be snappish, not to mention worried.
I sat up when you mentioned Paradise in the UP. It is the scene of a mystery series I gobbled up a year or so ago. Sounds like the reality isn't nearly so romantic.
That fish restaurant sounds really special.
