Day 9 - Bismarck, ND to Medora, ND

A New Day
We fell asleep last night in the midst of quite a storm. The proverb "this too, shall pass" came to mind more than once ... and sure enough, it did. It was sunny, clear and calm this morning.

The passing front caused quite a temperature drop. It was 46° at 8 am. Our furnace did a nice job of keeping us comfortable.

We're off to the Medora area today to capture some memories for Carol's swimming friend, Joanne Curry.
Leaving site #14 - Bismarck, ND

The Route
This was another easy driving day. We just got on I-94 and drove west until we got to the Medora exit. Total driving distance was 140 miles.

Along the Way
The roads were smooth and the day remained sunny. We did have brisk head and cross-winds for the entire trip. Our gas mileage has gone in the dumper because of winds we've encountered the past two days.
Terrain along I-94
There are miles of sunflower and wheat fields

A dramatic change occurred at milepost 31. We made a gentle climb surrounded by carefully tended fields. As we crossed the summit and began to descend, the terrain ahead immediately changed to that of the badlands. We were startled by the abrupt change
Whoa! What happened to the fields?

Arriving in Medora
We gained an hour because of entering the Mountain Time Zone. As a result, we arrived an hour before we could check-in.
Entrance
(pool and tennis courts on the left)
Camp office

We waited to check-in at the camp office. John and Suzy Jackson pulled in behind us. They're from Fairborn, OH and are on a two-year, full-time camping trip with their three children.
Carol is doing some set up in site #75.

Exploring
We made reservations for a Pitchfork Steak Fondue dinner and the Medora Musical on Monday. These are highlight events for the area.

We also took a quick peek at downtown Medora. One business stood head and shoulders above all others.
Medora Depot made an immediate impression

We took side-trips to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park and to the city of Killdeer. Each is described in a separate Day 9 post.
